Variations

I've been very busy lately with my online courses and I haven't had much time to create new works even though I have (as always) a lot of projects in my cartons.

To make you wait, a few small letters with, once is customary, a little color (I admit, my palette is limited).

You can see a video of the work in progress there.

And, if you want to attend the course, the link for registration is here

The flesh is sad...

...alas, and I read all the books

Fragment of a poem by Mallarmé realized on a page of a dictionary (the book par excellence).

And, to be a little in my era, I calligraphed these verses with a palette pen by reinterpreting a typeface, the COURIER NEW whose spaces are somettimes  bad and which still are in my interpretation.

The whole was calligraphied in Payne's grey and, for decoration, a little bit of watercolor with some white and ultramarine blue.

The fury of creating

A new composition with a NEULAND reworked on a text by Emile Zola proposed by my wife.

The writing was done with a piece of wood and watercolor (Payne gray), the decoration is inspired by the tiled backgrounds of the Gothic period with a line whose center is the O of glory at the penultimate line.

I used several blues and greys as well as gold leaf for the small decorative elements.

The paper is a mixture of hemp and linen with straw inclusions.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that I will be conducting an online course (in french) on NEULAND on December 12 & 13. All the info on the page that lists my courses here.

Filigrees online - new date

As the 2 first courses are full and, as I had to cancel IRL courses because of the lockdown, there is a new course available 21 & 22 November.

Registration to be done on zoom with this link: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_PMnnA0ueQ2OnEfxKgRAC-w

We will study things like that

But we will go further and, further & further. There will be a Filigrees II beginning of 2021 for the ones who will have registered to the first course and who would like to go further (did I use "further" too many times ??)

Apocalypse

 It's a bit trendy, isn't it?

In any case, while I was emptying my boxes, I found a version of chapter 12 of the Apocalypse made a few years ago.

There is rustica and uncial for the Latin version, the French version is in carolingian.

And there is colour, too much for my taste, which is why this work sleeps in a cardboard box.

ABC d'Airs

Good news for the lucky holders of the ABC d'Airs box set.

The QR code printed inside finally leads to something!

For those who haven't invested yet, now is the time :-)

Hello !!

It's been far too long since I've posted anything. Various contingencies have kept me away from my computer.

For my return, I am delivering a monogram that I made a few weeks ago but that I didn't want to show until it had arrived in Australia, at its addressee's home. It's done and so here is Linda's monogram, LCK, hand-made linen paper, gold leaf gilding and, as far as colours are concerned, a mixture of Payne grey, Prussian blue and cobalt blue.

The circle of filigrees is about 8 centimetres in diameter.

The course not to be missed !

On the 17th and 18th of October, I'll give a course on the second bible of Charles the Bald (writing and decoration) at the cultural centre of Welkenraed.

Originally planned for April of this year, it could not take place because of the pandemic.

There are still places available (with masks and distances) for fans.

So if you don't want to be the one who doesn't get the fries in the same package, contact the cultural centre quickly to register!

I can't wait to go back to Belgium and eat those crispy fries, whatever the package ;-

Day's dream

A work for four hands and above all for two brains. My wife offered me this fragment of Zola's Germinal. And we both worked on the composition, the writing, the colours.

Then, of course, once I had finished scribbling on the paper, she did the framing.

I am very happy with the result.

The writing is a 16th century humanistic, and I am happy to have gone back to an older type of decoration, the tiled background for the strip on the side.

Different dilutions of Payne's grey and leaf gilding to bring the light.

Grey

A sudden craving for white vine and, as I've been doing too much blue lately, grey, Payne grey, gold in shell and still a bit of Prussian blue to finish.

In a small gilded frame found by my wife, it makes a very nice decoration.

Blue

It seems I can't switch to another color lately.
And the stained-glass window I did a while ago made me want to go back to those patterns.
This time, I "invented" a small rosace, embossed and then filigreed.
The embossing is less elaborate, but it remains a small (8 cm in diameter) and pleasant realisation.

Gravity, give it back to the weight of the earth...

Fourth and last version of my fragment of Rainer Maria Rilke's Sonnets to Orpheus that I was telling you about here.
The first inked version does not satisfy me so I changed for an intaglio lettering for the original version and a very small and elongated version for the French translation.

All this is done on watercolor paper, iron gall ink and Prussian blue.

Recycling

It's decided, I stop calligraphy and I move on to nail art.
What I produced this morning has absolutely no interest except the decoration of my thumb :-)

Workshop

it's becoming a habit, I create course certificates for the people who attend my courses.
Here is a view of the attestations for the trainees of this weekend on Art Nouveau.

Composition

There are still a few places left for this weekend's class in the workshop.
It will be dedicated to Art Nouveau and composition.
As an example of what will be covered during this course, some pictures of a work in progress on a fragment of Rilke's Sonnets at Orpheus.

first pencil version

second version reworked for justification

third version in ink, first draft of the final version without the decoration

If you are interested, you can still contact me :-)

Genesis

My version of Genesis, in computer language (php) and in colors (as in my code editor), with the result displayed.

First, connect to server caelum (the sky) with username Moyses and password rubusarderet (burning bush) to access the database genesis.
If the connection fails, the system displays a fragment of an epigram of Martial: There is no god, the sky is empty.
Otherwise, we look for Genesis images and display them in ascending order.
If this step fails, a fragment of the Vulgate text will be displayed: terra est inanis et vacua.

The text and symbols are inspired by NEULAND with the introduction of uncial forms of abbreviations and ligatures.
Then there are the images, in iron gall ink, of the different days:
separation of light and darkness
separation of upper and lower waters
separation of land and water and creation of plants
creation of the moon, the sun and the stars
creation of birds and fish
creation of animals and man
rest

Monogram

Here is one of my last realizations on commission, an AFC monogram with the date of birth of the C integrated in the filigree and in shades of red.

So there are 2 reds, two types of filigree without counting the borders and gold leaf gilding.

Loneliness

It's been too long since I've posted a message on this blog. The fault is mine, mea culpa.
So here is a new work, it seems I can't get rid of the NEULAND lately.
It's a quote from Pascal Quignard, embossing on paper blackened with iron gall ink, insertion of golden patina by my wife.

loneliness, a precious stone, silence, darkness

Sorry for the quality of the pictures, the black of the paper is quite shiny and I couldn't get good pictures in any lighting.

commission

Not being able to give my classes, I nevertheless continue to work.
And a charming lady from Canada was kind enough to order some small letters with filigrees.
Here are the first ones, there will be more!

If you, too, would like to buy a letter, a monogram, on paper, on parchment, on metal, etc, don't hesitate to contact me :-)
