It's been a long time since I posted filigrees...

Here is a monogram made for a commission to make a tattoo (I think it's going to be painful).

The overall design is 15cm in diameter, acrylic paint on paper.

Hello !!

 It's been far too long since I've posted anything. Various contingencies have kept me away from my computer.

For my return, I am delivering a monogram that I made a few weeks ago but that I didn't want to show until it had arrived in Australia, at its addressee's home. It's done and so here is Linda's monogram, LCK, hand-made linen paper, gold leaf gilding and, as far as colours are concerned, a mixture of Payne grey, Prussian blue and cobalt blue.

The circle of filigrees is about 8 centimetres in diameter.

Here is one of my last realizations on commission, an AFC monogram with the date of birth of the C integrated in the filigree and in shades of red.

So there are 2 reds, two types of filigree without counting the borders and gold leaf gilding.

Initials, next step

A few more initials & some monograms, things are progressing slowly.

Art Nouveau

I am currently working on a new template for an Art Nouveau alphabet from the magazine Ver Sacrum, published between 1898 and 1903. It is an extraordinary publication, both in terms of the lettering and the illustrations and texts. The Heidelberg Library offers a complete digital version of all the magazine's occurrences. I'm enjoying it!
As an example, here are a few monograms and ligatures picked out here and there.

I post relatively little lately, it's because I have other obligations (administrative among others...) and in fact less availability for calligraphy.
Nevertheless, here is the result of a recent commission, an MCC monogram.

For a commission, I made this monogram with the initials of both parents and those of their children.
I was only allowed to use black, so I used 3, a black from Mars, a ferro-gallic ink & an ivory black. The difference is subtle and does not really appear in the photos. The main thing is that the patrons are happy, right?

Virgil said it (not exactly in this form), I hope it's true.
In the meantime, a little monogram for friends who are going through difficult times.

I stay on letters about 2cm high, mixture of walnut stain and iron gall ink, the heart is gilded with gold leaf, the filigrees are done with iron gall ink.

After about 12 hours, the monogram is finally finished.

It is about 10cm wide, as a finishing touch, as you can see on the first picture, I added a layer of arabic gum on the letters to give them more shine.

Weekends are not long enough.
After 6 hours of work (I don't count the preparatory work), here is the status of the last monogram in progress. There is still a long way to go!

I couldn't stay on my failure.
So here's version 2, in red!

I much prefer, the two shades of red are fused enough so that the filigree patterns are not too obvious.

I regularly complain that I don't have time during the year to work on my calligraphies... It's even worse during the holidays!
I'm nonetheless share a few "in progress" things with you :

To begin, I continue on my stained glass on slate (which I have already had the opportunity to talk about here for example).

I arrive at the end (more than ten hours of work to foresee) of the engraving of the filigrees, it will be time then to pass to the following stage, rust!

Otherwise, I work on several large letters & monograms, I show you here the preparatory works of the first monogram :

MC & G

They said yes to each other yesterday and we were there to see that. We had a marvelous day.

Now, I can show you the monogram I made for them.

And, as one has to dress a bit for a wedding, I made this chain mail tie, quite nice even if a bit heavy :-)

For my wife's neck, I chose something a bit lighter, I made her this pendant of slate, engraved with a filigree pattern and gilded with gold powder.

Plexiglas monogram

My first try, as good as the design was, wasn't deep enough to tool the soaps.
Hopefully, I found an old bit of Plexiglas lying around in the garden so I tried once more, this time using a little milling machine to engrave it.

As the Plexiglas is transparent, this time, I can show you the monogram right side up, it is still an SC.

I think it will do the job this time, I'll post a pic of the tooled soaps once their maker would have tried this new seal.

And of course, it gave me tons of ideas to work with Plexiglas, to be followed :-)

Soap seal

I've started to work on the design of a seal for a friend. This seal is to be used on handmade soap.
If I'm quite happy with the monogram, the shape of the seal needs to be reworked.
