Saperlipopette

Just a small note with a variation on the NEULAND, a script that I particularly like for its plastic qualities.

And as it is never enough, some filigrees to embellish the whole.

And a small video showing the process of modification of the letters

If you would like to play this game with me, you can register to my online course for next weekend.

QWERTY

After a first keyboard in the medieval style, here is a keyboard in NEULAND and embossing.

This time I only put the letters of the alphabet and not the other keys and besides, the letters are a little bit bigger than the embossed keys, keys which are not all the same size. :-)

The garden of delights

I call it by this name because of the well-being it provides in exchange for the care we provide but it's just my garden.

Here is a calligraphic version in NEULAND variations which lists almost all the contents of the place.

And could I do it without filigrees?

Of course not, I even invented some new patterns for the occasion

And, for once, I put, not only color, but GREEN !!!!

Lots of different greens, mixed with red, blue, yellow, brown but still greens.

The scale is not always respected but the layouts and the general shape are.

ABC workshop

I haven't posted anything on this blog for ages, too busy elsewhere.

Summer is here, time to make the workshop more visible for the tourist on the go.

I am open every Saturday morning from 9:30 am to 1 pm and at other times of the week, as soon as I am at work, the workshop is open.

You will have noticed that my taste for shimmering color mixes is becoming more and more pronounced with time.

Just a little magic word to announce the course of this weekend on the NEULAND (in French).

You can see a video of the work in progress there.

And, if you want to attend the course, the link for registration is here

The fury of creating

A new composition with a NEULAND reworked on a text by Emile Zola proposed by my wife.

The writing was done with a piece of wood and watercolor (Payne gray), the decoration is inspired by the tiled backgrounds of the Gothic period with a line whose center is the O of glory at the penultimate line.

I used several blues and greys as well as gold leaf for the small decorative elements.

The paper is a mixture of hemp and linen with straw inclusions.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that I will be conducting an online course (in french) on NEULAND on December 12 & 13. All the info on the page that lists my courses here.

Both of these 2 courses will be taught in French. An english version will be planned later

And to make you want one or the other, a small picture...

Genesis

My version of Genesis, in computer language (php) and in colors (as in my code editor), with the result displayed.

First, connect to server caelum (the sky) with username Moyses and password rubusarderet (burning bush) to access the database genesis.
If the connection fails, the system displays a fragment of an epigram of Martial: There is no god, the sky is empty.
Otherwise, we look for Genesis images and display them in ascending order.
If this step fails, a fragment of the Vulgate text will be displayed: terra est inanis et vacua.

The text and symbols are inspired by NEULAND with the introduction of uncial forms of abbreviations and ligatures.
Then there are the images, in iron gall ink, of the different days:
separation of light and darkness
separation of upper and lower waters
separation of land and water and creation of plants
creation of the moon, the sun and the stars
creation of birds and fish
creation of animals and man
rest

Loneliness

It's been too long since I've posted a message on this blog. The fault is mine, mea culpa.
So here is a new work, it seems I can't get rid of the NEULAND lately.
It's a quote from Pascal Quignard, embossing on paper blackened with iron gall ink, insertion of golden patina by my wife.

loneliness, a precious stone, silence, darkness

Sorry for the quality of the pictures, the black of the paper is quite shiny and I couldn't get good pictures in any lighting.

Faut ĆŖtre malin

It was on hearing this serinerant slogan on the radio for the umpteenth time that I decided on my calligraphic occupation of confinement.
Most of my colleagues are involved in "challenges" and my gregarious instinct being what it is (ie non-existent), I had to find my own way.
So I compose from advertising slogans, one maxim a day.
Here is my production for the moment.
You'll tell me that it's nonsense and I'll tell you that you're absolutely right :-)

Eternalize just one hour of love...

Well, the text I showed you the initial E is finished.
It was a fragment of L'Eve future by Villiers de l'Isle Adam.

You can see the transcript of the complete passage here.

Pangrammatic curtains (continuation & end)

After the German and English versions, I added the French version, another in Gaelic and a last one in red and Latin.

All that's left to do is to hang it on the window...

Beati

This project will have been going on for almost three years, but it is finally over.

It is therefore about the beatitudes in the version of Saint Luke and according to the text of the vulgate.
The cadel B was made on metal and the embossing on a rag paper whose provenance I have totally forgotten.

I'm rather happy with the result, especially with my abbreviations, ligatures and Tironian notes in the NEULAND style, but even without mentioning these details, the overall view is rather nice, isn't it?

Pangram curtain

The winter sun is sometimes annoying when I work in my workshop, so my wife made me a curtain.
But I can't leave a fabric of this surface untouched! I have to scribble on it!
And as I didn't know which text to use, I fell back on pangrams in several languages.
The advantage is that it will give my trainees ideas when they take calligraphy classes in the workshop and don't know what to write.
I'm only at the beginning, I started with a pangram in English and in NEULAND.

I continued with a German version in Gothic fraktur...

the next one will be a French version, soon...

The secret I'm looking for...

End of year, end of composition.
I'm done with the fragment of "L’ƉtĆ©" by Camus.
Partly in NEULAND, partly in Gothic, both scripts being inspired by Rudolf Koch.

Watercolou, iron gall ink and gouache on kraft paper.

And I take this opportunity to wish you a very good New Year's Eve & an excellent year 2020.

Eosin

I found, at the bottom of my medicine cabinet, an old (over 30 years old) bottle of aqueous eosin. It's a bit too transparent for my taste to be used as is, but here's an example of the (amazing) result when you drop a bit of eosin in iron gall ink still wet.

I'm fascinated by the fluorescent green, it's quite unexpected.

Kraft is life

At least, that's what my wife claims (her background as a framer probably had something to do with it). To please her, I wrote this sentence on a kraft strip stuck on the door of her workshop.

And since it made me want to write in NEULAND (tampering with it a bit, I admit), I started the calligraphy, on kraft, of a fragment from L'ƩtƩ by Camus.

More proverbs

we continue (despite the few positive returns), my wife and I to reinterpret the proverbs and maxims.
Here are two new ones, seasonal.

To show solidarity with the social movements of the moment.

And a revised proverb in a fruity version, which targets in particular the kiwis.

Me fecit

Because I don't thank her enough for the excellent work she does to highlight my compositions with her frames, because she deserves to be fully associated with my work, I made this little stamp for my wife.

This is of course not enough to account for all the help she gives me (you can imagine that she is not only framing my works) but she will now at least be able to put her signature on the back of the frames.
